Inspiration

Dear fellow citizens,

Marking the centenary of a historic event, such as the First World War, represents a kind of a privilege for the whole Serbian nation - the privilege of learning the society and civilization walk through time and the constitution of cultural and historical vertical.

As such, Serbian history and culture is an equal member of European and world history and culture, and the Serbian nation is one of the saddest witnesses of the terrible suffering of the participants in the First World War . The credits of the Serbian army and many individuals for ending the war are tremendous, and the victims of Serbian people deserve remembrance.

We have always been willing to change and move forward boldly. Let that battle cry of our glorious ancestors lead us to collect, restore, and verify in order to remain remembered and documented for the following centuries.

History binds us not to let this cathartic experience fall into oblivion, but to become aware and start renewing the universal values of love, honour, the culture of remembering, creativity and above all - humanity. History calls us to take personal responsibility for the future of our descendants.

On this occasion, we address you with a request to become interested in this chapter of our past, to talk to your neighbors, family and friends, to engage in the adventure of exploring and searching for documents, photographs, autobiographical documents, monuments, diaries, medals, postcards, soldiers’ letters - Your ancestors. This act of good will will show that you are an important part of our community, that you are aware of the importance and the impact history has on contemporary moment, that you are conscientious and responsible to the challenges of your time, but that you are also willing to give a clear and unambiguous answer to the question of what it means to keep and nurture one’s own identity.
